In the next week or so, many Bernicia tenants will begin receiving free low energy light bulbs in the post to help cut energy bills.
A pack of nine bulbs – at no cost to you – will be arriving at 10,500 homes and retirement living locations by post later this month.
It’s part of a £275,000 investment by Bernicia into further improving the energy efficiency of our homes across the North East.
We’ve analysed data from our housing stock which allows us to focus the low energy bulbs being sent to tenants we know currently have limited use of low energy bulbs in their homes.
Low energy lightbulbs help to cut electricity bills and reduce carbon dioxide emissions, all without reducing the quality of light in your homes.
Lighting makes up 11% of average UK household electricity consumption, so by fitting the bulbs you receive, they could help save money on your bills.
If you replace all the bulbs in your home with the low energy lights we send you, you could save around £55 a year on your electricity bills.
These lights last around five times longer than the traditional halogen lightbulbs and produce the same amount of light, but use up to 80% less power.
Bernicia is aiming to achieve SAP C energy ratings – the Government’s measure to assess a home’s energy and environmental performance – for at least 90% of our homes by 2025/26, making them more energy efficient.
The low energy lightbulbs, alongside other energy efficiency measures such as new air source heat pumps fitted in some properties, will help us meet that target which is five years ahead of what the Government said we should work towards.
