A garden capturing the headlines at BBC Gardeners’ World Live will thrill a whole new audience eagerly awaiting its arrival at a permanent home in Blyth.
Social media star Hannah Reid is one of the expert horticulturalists alongside the likes of Monty Don and Carol Klein at the hugely popular show opening on Thursday June 13 at the Birmingham NEC, where her ‘Flora and Flavour’ garden is one of the stand-out exhibits.
Bernicia has sponsored Bedlington-born Hannah to construct the courtyard garden – which she will rebuild at the housing association’s Alwinton Court age exclusive living location straight after the show closes.
She will transport dozens of flowers, herbs, fruit trees, planting beds, 26 railway sleepers and patio furniture the 220 miles from Birmingham to Blyth.
Her team of gardeners will then set to work over a week, recreating the BBC Gardeners’ World Live garden in the grounds of Alwinton Court.
Excited residents will help with the build and Hannah will devote much of the next three months working with them to establish the garden, so that it can be enjoyed by residents for years to come.
The ‘Flora and Flavour’ garden has edible plants and perennial flowers and trees, with a seating area where residents can relax in a tranquil space. The planting includes foxgloves, lupins and salvia, plus courgettes, runner beans, aubergines and tumbling tomatoes, along with pear trees, gooseberry and red currant bushes.
The planting will encourage wildlife with a small pond to boost biodiversity in the garden.
Hannah said: “Over the last seven years I have fallen in love with gardening and cultivation of food in my own garden and on my allotment.
“I encourage anyone to start gardening, no matter how big or small the space you have and try to increase wildlife and biodiversity into your gardens.
“I am so happy my showcase garden from BBC Gardeners’ World Live is being relocated to Alwinton Court in Blyth. Being brought up in a nearby town, the area means a lot me. I look forward to working with the residents on this project over the coming few months!”
Paul White, Head of Bernicia Living, which provides quality homes and living environments for people aged 55 and over in the North East, said: “We jumped at the chance to sponsor Hannah to build and exhibit her garden at BBC Gardeners’ World Live.
“Her idea to replant the entire garden at Alwinton Court is hugely exciting for our team and everyone who lives there.
“Residents will be able to enjoy nurturing the garden as well as sitting in it and enjoying the thoughtful planting and design. There’s a real buzz about the place and they can’t wait for it all to arrive on June 19th.”
Hannah will supervise the garden build at Alwinton Court, supported by her team of gardeners at Key Enterprises, a charity supporting adults with learning difficulties and mental health needs, where she works as gardening supervisor.
Hannah is better known to her 43,000 Instagram followers as organic gardener and freelance writer @gingergrows1 and is billed as an expert for the public to meet at BBC Gardeners’ World Live.
